4-2 Blowout!

At the start of the 17th Bundesliga matchday, Holstein Kiel surprisingly won 4-2 against Borussia Dortmund. The visitors from Dortmund had the game in their control at the beginning, but were unable to create genuine scoring opportunities until the middle of the first half. A loss of possession in the build-up play brought the home team to the winning path in the 27th minute, as Shuto Machino finished a counterattack from 16 meters out, putting the hosts in the lead.

Five minutes later, Phil Harres added another goal with a header, and after that, the Dortmund players seemed frustrated and aimless. On the other side, Kiel maintained possession and scored another counterattack goal by Alexander Bernhardsson just before the break.

After the halftime, Dortmund made an effort to get back into the game, but it took until the 71st minute for Giovanni Reyna to reduce the gap. Six minutes later, Jamie Gittens added another goal for the visitors. For the home team, the last minutes of the game became a nail-biter, especially after they were reduced to 10 men in the 86th minute following the red card for Lewis Holtby. In the final action of the game, BVB goalkeeper Kobel left his goal to support the offense, only for Kiel’s Jann-Fiete Arp to score in the empty net, effectively ending the game.

In the table, Dortmund is now only in eighth place, with several teams still to play on this matchday. Kiel, despite the win, remains the second-to-last team. The Störche will face Hoffenheim on Saturday, while the BVB has a match on Friday evening in Frankfurt.
