Merz's Plans Spark Climate Crisis Fears

Green faction leader Katharina Dröge warned against reversing climate protection measures.

The background is the new report of the Copernicus Climate Service, which works on behalf of the EU. According to the report, 2024 was the warmest year since data has been recorded, and it exceeded the 1.5-degree mark for the first time.

“This is a stern warning to all of us, once again making clear how serious the situation is with regard to the climate crisis” Dröge said on Friday in the RBB24 Inforadio. “Climate protection must remain a priority, also for German politics.”

Dröge warned in this context about the plans of CDU leader Friedrich Merz to repeal the EU’s decision to ban new internal combustion engine vehicles by 2035.

“If he would take it seriously, it would have a fire accelerant effect with regard to the climate crisis. That’s why we Greens will do everything to prevent it. And as an economic politician, I say: It also secures jobs in Germany if we take the electric mobility seriously. Electric mobility has had drastically rising numbers, and if Germany doesn’t join in, but instead develops backwards, we will ultimately lose prosperity and employment here as well.
