New Poll Suggests AfD Gains Momentum Ahead of German Election

A recent survey by infratest dimap for the ARD-Deutschlandtrend has shown that the Alternative for Germany (AfD) has regained support, with 20 percent of voters planning to cast their ballots in the upcoming federal election on February 23.

The AfD remains in second place, behind the CDU and CSU, which together could secure 31 percent of the vote if the election were held today. This is a two-percentage-point decrease from the previous survey, but still indicates a strong showing for the party.

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) holds the third spot, with 15 percent of the projected vote, a one-percentage-point increase. The Greens, meanwhile, remain at 14 percent, ranking fourth.

Three parties are vying for a spot in the next German Bundestag: the Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW), the Free Democratic Party (FDP), and the Left Party. The BSW has gained five percent support, while the FDP and the Left Party have each improved by one percentage point, leaving them at four percent. This marks a slight increase in their chances of clearing the five-percent threshold.

The survey, conducted by infratest dimap from Monday to Wednesday, polled 1,323 eligible voters in Germany, a representative sample size.
