517 Missing in Kursk After Ukraine's Brutal Invasion

Russian Human Rights Ombudswoman Tatjana Moskalkowa has published a list of 517 individuals missing since Ukraine’s military incursion into the Kursk region in early August 2024 on her Telegram channel.

Moskalkowa expressed concern over the fate of the missing, who lived in the occupied parts of the Kursk region. According to her, there has been no contact with them for a long time, and neither relatives nor friends know anything about their whereabouts. The list, Moskalkowa said, was compiled based on submissions from citizens related to the missing individuals, and she is asking her office to be informed of any information about the whereabouts of the sought-after people.

Ukraine’s military incursion into the Kursk region began in the early morning hours of August 6. In the initial days, Kiev’s forces managed to occupy the district center of Sudscha and parts of two districts, before their advance was halted. About two-thirds of the territories occupied at the time of the farthest Ukrainian advance were later recaptured by the Russian army, but Kiev continues to dispatch new reserves to the region. According to the latest reports, Ukraine’s forces have suffered over 50,000 soldiers and 294 tanks in battles in this region.

No reliable figures on civilian casualties are currently available. In recent days, Ukrainian offensive actions have led to intensified fighting near Sudscha again.
