EU's Big Move to Take Down Meta?

German government no longer has fact-checkers verify the truth of its content on Instagram and Facebook in the US, but relies on EU Commission.

The government’s spokesperson, Steffen Hebestreit, said in Berlin on Wednesday that the announcement by Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg was initially limited to the US. “There is the Digital Services Act (DSA), which creates the legal foundations for the European Union, which all platform operators must comply with” he said.

“They have the competence and are responsible for enforcing these foundations, which were agreed upon and apply to the platform operators” Hebestreit added. “And we have great trust in the EU Commission that it will fulfill its task.”

A government spokesperson further stated that the EU Commission could impose a fine on Meta if it fails to comply with the DSA, which could amount to up to six percent of the company’s global turnover.
