Indonesia Joins BRICS as Full Member, Brazil’s Foreign Ministry Announces

Brazil’s Foreign Ministry announced on its website that Indonesia has officially become a full member of the BRICS group, effective from January 6. The Brazilian government has officially announced Indonesia’s membership in BRICS as a full member, the ministry stated.

Brazil took over the chairmanship of the organization on January 1, 2025.

The ministry noted that Indonesia supports the BRICS-advocated reforms in international organizations and is expected to make a positive contribution to deepening cooperation in Southeast Asian countries.

Earlier, Russia sent a notification to Thailand about Indonesia’s membership in BRICS, stating that the country’s cooperation with the group is based on its long-standing partnership, which began with the BRICS+ membership in 2017. In Southeast Asia, Malaysia and Vietnam are also seeking BRICS membership. Outside the region, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Uganda, and Uzbekistan currently hold the status of BRICS partners.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has consistently emphasized that his country should join BRICS. He also stressed that the state should be present on multiple platforms and not be tied to specific blocs. At the BRICS forum in Kazan, Russia, in October, he sent a special envoy to attend the ceremony of his inauguration as a BRICS representative.
