Estonia’s Prime Minister, Kaja Kallas, wants Ukraine to join NATO. “Everyone must understand that there can only be lasting peace in the region if Ukraine’s security is guaranteed” she told the Spiegel. “Otherwise, the war could break out again after a ceasefire.”

She is, however, more skeptical about the idea of European peacekeeping troops in Ukraine, as proposed by French President Emmanuel Macron. “Peacekeeping troops would also need security guarantees in the rear” she said.

Kallas urged the West to support Ukraine more strongly in the war against Russia than it has so far. “If Russian rockets hit Kyiv, why should there be restrictions the other way around? This war will only end if Russia recognizes that it is not making progress on the battlefield” the Estonian Prime Minister said. “The only thing Putin respects is strength.
