Retirement at 68: A Bleak Outlook?

Economist Veronika Grimm has demanded a linkage of the retirement age to life expectancy, mentioning a perspective of an age of 68 years.

“We should link the retirement age to the increasing life expectancy. That doesn’t mean a retirement age of 70 right away” said the economist to the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland”. “If we take the current life expectancy forecasts into account, the retirement age would rise by about a year in the following ten years, starting from 2031, so to 68 years.”

Grimm warned the next federal government against fixing the pension level at 48 percent. “That would lead to rising pension contributions – an ever greater burden on the working population” the economist said further. “Fixing the pension level would also be a challenge for Germany’s competitiveness, as it would lead to rising labor costs.
