German Social Minister Karl-Josef Laumann (CDU) warned the SPD against setting the minimum wage politically. “The debate on the minimum wage’s height should be left to the minimum wage commission, even if their work in the past didn’t convince me” Laumann told the “Rheinische Post” (Friday).
“Politics should be happy not to have to do it. I’m confident that the social partners will develop a suitable solution.” The CDU politician further emphasized: “But the truth also includes: We started too low at 8.50 euros, and I expect we’ll end up around 14 euros. But making provisions, I consider wrong.” Chancellor Olaf Scholz demands a minimum wage increase to 15 euros.
