Merry Christmas to the 40% of Germans who can't afford a tree!

According to the German Social Association (SoVD), more and more people will have to forgo a Christmas tree and a festive meal this year.

“The Christmas festival is barely affordable for an increasing number of people” said SoVD Chairwoman Michaela Engelmeier to the “New Osnabrück Times”. Christmas trees have become so expensive that many will have to forgo them this year. Many people will suffer from the constant increasing prices, “as everything keeps getting more expensive”. “Even food is so expensive that the Christmas dinner won’t be as festive for many people in Germany as one would imagine.”

Moreover, many are worried about the future. “Many are anxious about their job or fear being poor in old age.” The end of the grand coalition government has also contributed to the feeling of uncertainty among many, as they experience the times as “unreliable”.
