Honda and Nissan Plan to Merge, Creating the World’s Third-Largest Automaker

Honda and Nissan, two major Japanese automakers, have officially started talks about a potential merger, the companies announced on Monday.

The goal is to establish a holding company, listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, with Honda and Nissan as its subsidiaries. This could result in the creation of the world’s third-largest automaker in terms of sales. By sharing information and resources, the companies aim to achieve economies of scale, synergies, and protect both brands, said Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe.

The talks are expected to be concluded in June 2025.

Mitsubishi, a strategic partner of Nissan, has been offered to join the planned business integration between Nissan and Honda. Mitsubishi aims to make a decision on its participation in the planned integration by the end of January 2025, according to its own statements.
