The Magdeburg Plot Has a Parliamentary Sequel. According to a report by “Bild”, the Union faction is demanding a special session of the German Bundestag’s Interior Committee before Christmas, following the Christmas market attack on Friday.
The committee will reportedly discuss the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident of Taleb A., a 50-year-old from Saudi Arabia, who plowed through the Christmas market in Magdeburg, Sachsen-Anhalt, on Friday evening, injuring numerous people. Latest reports indicate five fatalities and around 200 injured, including approximately 40 severely injured, over 80 with serious injuries, and many more with lesser injuries.
Andrea Lindholz, the deputy leader of the Union faction (CSU), told the newspaper: “The Magdeburg attack raises questions about the authorities’ knowledge of warnings from within and outside the country. These questions must be answered this year.” The Union is therefore demanding a special session of the Interior Committee. “The state must do everything in its power to protect people from such heinous attacks” the Union said.
Alexander Throm, the CDU’s interior policy spokesperson, is calling for the personal appearance of the responsible minister, Nancy Faeser (SPD), in the committee: “The Federal Interior Minister owes it to the five deceased victims to personally address our questions in the committee. This respect is due to them.
