After a car crashed into a crowd on Magdeburg’s Christmas market on Friday evening, the city administration is now considering an attack. According to a statement by City Spokesman Michael Reif in the evening to journalists in Magdeburg, “There are numerous injured, the fire department, the police are in action and tending to the injured, nothing more can be said at the current time” he explained, adding, “The pictures are terrifying.”
Sources close to the emergency responders reported at least one fatality and up to 80 injured. The suspected driver has been arrested. He allegedly used a gap between the concrete blocks and drove in a zigzag pattern on the Christmas market. The local conditions also require that the driver first took a sharp turn and then accelerated again before crashing into the crowd.
