Last Thursday, 1. FC Heidenheim, led by coach Frank Schmidt, could only draw 1-1 with FC St. Gallen in the Conference League group phase’s final match, thus missing a direct spot in the quarterfinals as they could no longer claim a top-eight finish.
Initially, the home team was the clearly better side and rewarded themselves with the opening goal in the 30th minute, courtesy of Norman Theuerkauf, who converted a cross from Sirlord Conteh with a powerful volley from five meters out.
However, the away team from Switzerland remained weak and lacking in ideas for a long time after the break. It wasn’t until the 77th minute that they suddenly equalized through Jozo Stanic. The home team failed to respond, and Heidenheim must now take the play-off route.
