Young Union Pushes for Tax Funding of Basic Income Health Costs

The Youth Union (JU) is strongly advocating for the complete coverage of healthcare costs for recipients of the Citizen’s Allowance through general tax revenue, demanding the implementation of the expert commission’s recommendations. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, JU leader Johannes Winkel stated, “The cost of services for Bürgergeld recipients, amounting to twelve billion euros annually, cannot simply be shifted onto those who pay contributions”.

Winkel emphasized that this provision is indefensible given the need for systemic reform. He argued that if the state deems that this specific group should receive the same level of care as those contributing to the insurance funds, the government must bear the financial burden. According to the Bundestag member, this discrepancy currently constitutes a “great social injustice within the social insurance system”.

The discussion follows moves by Health Minister Nina Warken (CDU), who has incorporated many suggestions from the expert commission, a proposal valued at twenty billion euros. Winkel applauded the ongoing reform initiative by the federal government. However, the current political challenge remains clear, as Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil (SPD) has not yet agreed to absorb these rising healthcare costs for Bürgergeld recipients from the federal budget.
