Young Union Leader Dampens Hopes for Cheaper Gas Prices

Johannes Winkel, chairman of the Young Union (CDU), has tempered expectations regarding further measures to lower fuel prices. According to the CDU representative speaking to the Funke media group’s Thursday editions, “If the oil price falls again, there will be no need for discussions about relief measures”. Currently, Winkel noted that it is difficult to say how prices will develop. However, he stated that if the government wishes to intervene despite falling prices, it could “quite simply lower taxes and levies on gasoline”. The head of the Young Union also advocated for the swift implementation of the new competition law rules, asserting that strengthening antitrust law by reversing the burden of proof was correct. He concluded that, “the remaining task is to apply these rules consistently”.
