Winkel Slams Union Response To Chancellor's Speech At Berlin Congress

Johannes Winkel, Chairman of the Young Union (JU), sharply criticized the behavior of trade unionists during the Chancellor’s address at the DGB Congress in Berlin. Winkel told the press that the “hysterical reaction” displayed by the DGB officials, characterized by whistling and shouting, was “shameful”.

The Bundestagsabgeordnete added that the Chancellor was simply making an open and honest appeal for support to ensure the social state could be fit for the future through collaboration between the economy, unions, and society. “With that, he hit the right tone” Winkel stated.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) faced audible disapproval, including boos and laughter, during his nearly 30-minute address at the DGB Congress on Tuesday. Merz called for support for deep structural changes to the social state, announced plans to modernize works council participation, and urged for a collective social effort. However, he also issued a stern warning about the potential consequences of years of stalled reforms.

The controversy was fueled partly by his statement that the changes required were “not actually too big” compared to the “great degree of social security” currently in the country that they intend to preserve. Laughter was also heard when the Chancellor stated that the reform plans were “not malicious” on the part of himself or the federal government.
