After the German Bookstore Prize was cancelled, Culture Minister Wolfram Weimer defended his decision. He told the Funke Media Group that if an institution openly supports the hateful slogan “Deutschland verrecke” it raises doubts about whether the prize is still worthy.
Weimer explained that the “Haber” procedure, which requires consultation with the domestic intelligence service before awarding subsidies, is only to be used in absolute exceptional cases in the cultural sector.
In reference to the bookstores’ protest, Weimer said he had read that their representatives had written an open letter thanking authorities for the public relations and support they had received. He emphasized the need for a debate and collective decision‑making on matters concerning bookstores and books. Consequently, he announced plans to invite key stakeholders from the book trade to a discussion about how to manage the future of the Bookstore Prize.
