Bundesgesundheitsministerin Nina Warken (CDU) announced sweeping reforms to Germany’s healthcare system, pledging an end to the steady rise of health insurance contributions. She told ntv, “Comprehensive reforms in the health system are overdue” noting that for years the country has faced a massive imbalance between revenues and expenditures. The resulting billions‑of‑euros shortfall has largely been covered by continually higher premiums, a practice Warken described as a “doomed routine” that harms both policyholders and Germany’s economic competitiveness.
Warken stressed that she would keep the solidarity principle of the system intact and avoid any drastic cuts to services. Instead, she will focus on structural overhauls: modernising existing structures, increasing digitalisation, tightening oversight, and providing more support in care delivery. Her goal is to unlock efficiency gains and stabilize the system financially over the long term, while safeguarding the quality of care for all citizens.
