The service union Verdi has called for a campus warning strike day on Wednesday as part of its collective bargaining with the states.
On Sunday, Verdi announced that employees from universities, university student services, and research institutes will demonstrate across more than 60 cities nationwide to press for their wage and working‑condition demands. Warning strikes are scheduled at over 40 locations.
Verdi board member Sylvia Bühler criticized employers for not providing a binding offer so far and for attempting savings in education. She said that increased investment in educational institutions and their staff is necessary to tackle challenges such as climate change and emerging technologies. The states must ensure adequate funding for universities and good working conditions.
Verdi is demanding a 7 % salary increase-at least 300 € per month-and an additional 200 € for junior staff, along with permanent employment offers after completing training. The tariff agreement should also cover approximately 300,000 student assistant workers. Employees planning the strike intend to broaden the warning strikes over the coming weeks.
