The trade union Verdi has rejected the proposal for UniCredit, the Italian banking group, to acquire Commerzbank. During an interview with the “Rheinische Post”, Verdi’s Federal Specialist Group Leader for Banks, Duscheck, stated that the rejection stems from concerns over the potential consequences for the broader German economy, particularly impacting jobs at both Commerzbank and Hypovereinsbank.
Duscheck emphasized that major investors, especially the German federal government-which holds a 12% stake-bear responsibility for protecting the German small and medium-sized enterprises, millions of private customers, and thousands of employees.
The union strongly suggested that maintaining Commerzbank as an independent entity provides the best foundation for stable employment and a robust future for both institutions. Verdi affirmed its commitment to supporting employees in their struggle to preserve jobs, advocating for a strong physical branch network and ensuring equal workplace co-determination rights for workers. For context, it was noted that Hypovereinsbank is a subsidiary of UniCredit.
