Union Welcomes Plan to Equip Train Conductors With Body Cameras

After the rail‑safety summit, CDU interior expert Alexander Throm welcomed the plan to give train conductors body‑cams. “AI‑driven video technology can spot danger early and buy crews crucial minutes” he told the “Rheinische Post” (Saturday edition).
Throm said a modernisation of the federal police law-currently being debated in parliament-is also essential. “Security can’t be held back by outdated rules” he noted. “Adding staff is vital, but relying on that alone isn’t enough and, in many places, is simply impossible”. The summit that day agreed to let every conductor wear a body‑cam voluntarily.

Meanwhile, the Left demands more public money for railways and lower bonuses for the board. Clara Bünger, deputy head of the Left’s parliamentary group, said rail safety is a public responsibility and that federal and state governments must fund it continuously and predictably. The party’s spokeswoman added that the railway must start internally: “End the bonus logic at the top, and invest in people, training and protective concepts”. The summit also adopted a seven‑point plan to boost safety on trains.
