Union Promises Third Cash Relief Package for High Gas Prices

Due to continued high prices for oil and gasoline, the CDU faction in the Bundestag is preparing a third “relief package” for drivers. Sepp Müller, the deputy faction chairman of the CDU, told the “Bild” newspaper on Tuesday that if the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz continues, they would introduce another support package. This package would focus on more targeted aid for small and medium-sized businesses, the logistics sector, and commuters. They plan to present concrete measures through a dedicated task force. According to the newspaper’s reference to “coalition circles” potential aid includes specific support for low- and middle-income earners, as well as an increased commuter allowance starting in July. However, Müller cautioned against overly high expectations, stating that “the truth must also be told: a price normalization will take months, and permanent subsidies funded by tax revenues are difficult”. Previously, the federal government and the Bundestag had approved an initial relief package on April 1st and a second one for drivers on May 1st.
