During the 32nd round of the Bundesliga, two relegation battles captivated audiences. In the first, Union Berlin faced 1. FC Cologne in a 2:2 draw, while in a parallel duel, reigning champions Bayern Munich fought a hard-earned draw against 1. FC Heidenheim with a 3:3 score.
The Union Berlin vs. Cologne match began quietly, with few clear chances until Cologne capitalized after taking the lead in the 33rd minute from a fine long-range effort by Marius Bülter. Union attempted to increase the pressure after halftime, but faced a solid Cologne defense. The visitors found their second goal in the 61st minute via Said El Mala. However, Cologne struggled to manage their advantage: Tom Rothe netted the equalizer in the 73rd minute, followed by a late strike from Livan Burcu in the 89th minute, leveling the score once more. For both teams, the race for security was not yet over, with Union sitting in 12th place directly above Cologne in 13th.
Meanwhile, the match between Bayern Munich and Heidenheim proved an equally dramatic affair. Bayern, seemingly aiming to give the team with the most to lose a thorough workout, initially struggled. Heidenheim jumped ahead in the 22nd minute through Budu Zivzivadze following a corner kick. Just nine minutes later, Eren Dinkci extended the lead to 2-0, netting into the vacant goal after sending a lofted ball past goalkeeper Urbig.
It took Bayern until almost halftime to find their rhythm. Leon Goretzka came back into the game in the 44th minute, scoring a superb free-kick that cut the deficit to 1-2. The second half saw the Bavarians increase their pressure, with Goretzka leveling the score at 2-2 in the 57th minute after capitalizing on a free-kick from Olise, striking with his knee.
Despite Bayern’s efforts to avoid a major embarrassment, Heidenheim’s Budu Zivzivadze scored a stunning goal in the 76th minute. Michael Olise finally pulled the trigger for Munich’s equalizer in the 10th minute of stoppage time. The drawn result was disheartening for Heidenheim, who desperately needed a win to secure their status independently; they are now relegated if St. Pauli and Wolfsburg both win on Sunday.
Other results from the afternoon included Hoffenheim defeating Stuttgart 3:3, Bremen losing to Augsburg 1:3, and Frankfurt losing to Hamburg 1:2.
