Ukraine Energy Grid in Crisis After Russian Nighttime Air Strikes Expert Warns

Ukrainian energy expert Oleksandr Kharchenko described the state of the country’s energy infrastructure after the latest Russian air strikes over the night into Tuesday as “extremely dangerous and critical”. He told the Funke media group that the current situation is more complicated than ever since the invasion began four years ago, adding, “When you receive so many hits, nothing can stay stable”. In Kyiv, one of the three central heating plants was badly damaged, with repairs expected to take several months.

Kharchenko said this situation is unprecedented: “Since World War II there has been no such large‑scale, targeted attack on a nation’s energy infrastructure”. He added that modern technology is far more complex than it was 80 years ago, making it possible to keep the grid running only through creative, unconventional solutions. Despite the challenges, he remains optimistic, stating, “They won’t be able to make us collapse”.
