In a January 2026 Yougov survey commissioned by Postbank, two‑thirds of German consumers said they plan to travel in 2026 despite rising living costs. Of those with travel plans, roughly 66 % reported that they are cutting back on holiday spending. Half of respondents noted that they are more vigilant about expenses than usual, while about 11 % admitted to tightening their budgets significantly. The leading factor behind more modest holiday plans is the increase in everyday costs (38 %), followed by higher travel expenses (27 %). Conversely, 36 % said they are not saving for their vacation.
The price pressure is hit hardest for lower‑income households. Approximately 76 % of respondents with a monthly household net income below €2,500 reported saving on holiday costs, compared to roughly 57 % of those earning €2,500 or more. When budgeting is tighter, a vacation is more likely to be compromised: almost 19 % of low‑income respondents would forgo a holiday entirely if needed, whereas just under 10 % of higher‑income respondents would consider doing the same. The study, which surveyed 2,110 participants, reflects these trends in travel‑planning behavior amid economic challenges.
