Police confirmed that the two victims of the rampage in Leipzig were a 63-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man, both of German nationality. While a precise count of the injured remains unavailable at this time, a 33-year-old man was involved in the attack. Yesterday afternoon, around 4:45 PM, the man drove a car through the pedestrian zone of downtown Leipzig, hitting several passersby.
The investigation is currently being conducted by the public prosecutor’s office and the police, focusing on charges of murder and attempted murder. According to initial reports, the 33-year-old used a VW Taigo, driving down Grimmaische Straße from Augustusplatz towards the market and beyond.
Emergency services of the Leipzig Police were able to apprehend the suspect shortly after the incident, finding him sitting in the car at the Thoma Church courtyard. The driver was taken into custody and is currently being held by the police. Authorities confirmed that there is no longer a risk to the public, and they are treating the incident as the work of a single perpetrator.
The police stated that the motive behind the crime is under investigation and that, so far, there is no evidence to suggest a political or religious motive.
