Trump Urges Hungary to Re‑Elect Orbán Ahead of Election

Two and a half weeks before Hungary’s parliamentary election, U.S. President Donald Trump issued a clear endorsement for incumbent Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. In a midnight‑CET post on Tuesday evening, Trump used his Truth Social platform to praise Orbán as “a truly strong and influential leader with a proven track record” adding that Orbán “works tirelessly for his great country and its people, and loves the United States of America as I do”. He said the bilateral relationship between Hungary and the U.S. has reached a new level of cooperation and spectacular successes thanks to Orbán’s leadership.

Trump urged Hungarians to vote for Orbán, calling him a true friend, fighter and winner who enjoys the president’s full support for a second term. Trump had previously backed Orbán in 2022, stating that it was a “honor to do so again”.

The election is scheduled for April 12. Current polls show Orbán trailing Peter Magyar and his party, the “Respekt‑und‑Freiheitspartei” Tisza-a pro‑European union party founded in 2021 that has recently surged to the top of the polls.
