Survey Shows Clear Majority Backs Government Relief Against High Energy Costs

Reflecting the high costs of energy and gasoline, a clear majority of German citizens continue to favor government intervention aimed at providing relief. This finding comes from a Forsa poll commissioned by the broadcasters RTL and ntv.

Approximately three-quarters (74 percent) of respondents support state support, while only about one-fifth (23 percent) wish for no such interventions. This approval is particularly strong among households with lower incomes, reaching 81 percent for those earning under €2,500. Support remains dominant even in higher income brackets, with 69 percent agreeing for those earning €4,000 and more.

A broad consensus is evident across political affiliations. Supporters of the Union advocate for state interventions at 68 percent, while the SPD stands at 74 percent. The Left Party shows the highest support at 82 percent, and AfD supporters show the highest level at 90 percent. Even among Green Party supporters, who are the most opposed to interventions at 45 percent, a narrow relative majority (48 percent) favors state action. Overall, only minorities hold the view that state intervention should be avoided.

Regarding the national government’s plan to send mine-sweeping vessels to the Strait of Hormuz, along with other nations, to secure shipping routes following the cessation of hostilities between the US and Iran, a narrow majority of citizens (50 percent) backs this initiative. Conversely, 42 percent are opposed, and 8 percent remained undecided.

Support is notably high among CDU/CSU supporters (70 percent) and Green Party members (60 percent). Similarly, a slim majority of SPD supporters (51 percent) favor deployment. The Left Party supporters are divided (41 percent for and 41 percent against), whereas the AfD supporters mostly reject the deployment (66 percent against).

Regional differences are minimal: in West Germany, 50 percent favor the deployment, compared to 49 percent in East Germany, where opposition stands at 41 percent, and 45 percent in West Germany.
