Survey: Majority Want Oil Embargo Against Russia Held While 36 % Germans Support Trade Restart

Thirty‑six percent of Germans say they would like to allow the export of Russian oil again overall, while a majority-61 %-saw in a Forsa poll for RTL that the current embargo against the country should stay in place.

Across the main party camps-CDU/CSU, SPD, the Greens and the Left-the majority favour keeping the ban. By contrast, AfD supporters stand out: 87 % of them want the embargo lifted. The willingness to ease the ban is especially pronounced in eastern Germany, where 45 % support the resumption of Russian oil sales, compared with only 35 % in the west.

The sale of Russian oil to Europe and America-barring a few exceptions-is now prohibited because of the Russian attack on Ukraine. To curb the sharp rise in oil prices, the U.S. government has temporarily allowed the purchase of Russian oil already at sea for a 30‑day period.
