After the resignation of the entire FDP leadership, European Parliament member Marie‑Agnes Strack‑Zimmermann said she is open to taking part in a new dual‑top structure for the party. “A dual leadership must reach the entire party” she told the “Tagesspiegel” on Monday. “So I will carefully examine who best fits that role and which proposal convinces the party. That person must also be able to carry the party forward in the long term”.
She made it clear she would not support candidates who try to use the upcoming leadership election for internal factional battles. “Those who are driven only by personal ego and who truly don’t care about the party’s future are not an option” the North Rhine‑Westphalian added.
Strack‑Zimmermann said she owes much to the FDP and wants to help shape the future of organised liberalism. She spoke about her own candidacy, which had already been reported by several media outlets on Monday afternoon. As chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Security and Defence, she acknowledges the many responsibilities she faces given the international situation. Nonetheless, she says she is ready to take on further responsibility and, “if the party wishes, to join a dual leadership”.
