The Federal President says 2036 is a historically problematic year for a German bid, citing the 1936 Games that were used by the Nazi regime as a propaganda showcase. While Germany is currently discussing the possibility of staging the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2036, 2040 or 2044, Steinmeier expressed hope that a host city would be chosen from Germany for the 2040 or 2044 Games instead.
