Steinmeier Opposes Germany’s 2036 Olympic Bid in Berlin

German President Frank Walter Steinmeier has spoken out against Germany bidding to host the 2036 Olympic Games, the Spiegel reports. The Federal President says 2036 is a historically problematic year for a German bid, citing the 1936 Games that were used by the Nazi regime as a propaganda showcase. While Germany is currently discussing the possibility of staging the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2036, 2040 or 2044, Steinmeier expressed hope that a host city would be chosen from Germany for the 2040 or 2044 Games instead.
