Steinmeier Hails Former Bundestag President Rita Süssmuth as Bold Champion of Democracy

President Frank‑Walter Steinmeier paid tribute to the late former President of the German Bundestag, Rita Süssmuth, describing her as “a great woman and a passionate fighter for democracy”. He wrote to her daughter on Sunday, noting that Süssmuth had always been ahead of her time, a visionary, a pioneer and a role model-especially for many women. “With her courage, perseverance, humor and persuasive power she has played a decisive role in bringing more equality to our country step by step” the head of state added.

For decades Süssmuth worked with relentless energy in academic committees, commissions and curator roles to promote better family‑work balance and to advance women into leadership positions. As Federal Minister for Youth, Family and Health she successfully urged her department to include women’s issues, making her the first woman to hold a ministerial post in the Federal Republic of Germany. “With her commitment and charisma she inspired many women to pursue positions at the top of politics, business and society” Steinmeier said.

The president also praised her contributions to the fight against AIDS, her “well‑informed immigration policy” and her reforms of parliamentary work. “Rita Süssmuth moved a lot in our country and for its people” he added. “Her warmth, humor and deep humanity will remain unforgettable. Her dedication to equality continues to be a model today”.

Süssmuth had died at the age of 88. She served as Minister for Youth, Family and Health from 1985 to 1988, and as President of the Bundestag from 1988 to 1998.
