Steinmeier Criticises US-Israel War on Iran, Calls It a Violation of International Law

President Frank‑Walter Steinmeier sharply denounced the war that the United States and Israel has launched against Iran. He said during a commemorative ceremony in Berlin-marking 75 years of the Foreign Office-that “our foreign policy is not made more convincing simply by refusing to call a breach of international law a breach of international law”. He added that we had already had to confront the Gaza conflict and that we must now grapple with the situation in Iran. The president stressed that the war is a violation of international law, a fact he sees as almost certain.

Steinmeier characterized the action as a politically disastrous mistake, “and, which frustrates me the most, an avoidable, unnecessary war, if the aim was to stop Iran’s path to a nuclear bomb”. He noted that the nuclear agreement had already brought them very far and that they had never been closer to an Iranian atomic arsenal than after the 2015 deal-a pact on which many of the current representatives had worked hard.

During the signing, the U.S. foreign minister reportedly said, “Let’s not underestimate the historic significance of this moment: With this agreement, we prevent war”. After that, President Trump, in the second year of his first term, cancelled the deal, and now, in his second term, he is leading the country into war.
