State Minister Demands Fuel Price Relief Plan Before Weekend

Citing the persistently high prices for gasoline, the Minister-President of Saxony-Anhalt, Sven Schulze (CDU), is urging the federal government to present and implement a support plan for motorists by the end of the week. Schulze told the “Bild” (Monday edition) that the frustration over fuel prices is unprecedented, stating that a plan must yield results this week to bring down the high gas prices. He emphasized the necessity for citizens and businesses to feel the reduction immediately, rather than waiting weeks or months. The CDU politician described the current situation in Germany as “truly catastrophic, endangering livelihoods”. He noted connecting with several company executives whose employees are threatening to reduce their daily office attendance because they can no longer afford the costs of filling up the tank and commuting long distances, arguing that the fuel price is completely consuming their wages in these specific companies where remote work is unavailable. Furthermore, Schulze dismissed calls for lower fares on buses and trains, arguing that such measures would not advance the country. He suggested that the debates surrounding these issues merely highlight how distant certain elements of Berlin’s politics are from the reality of everyday life in smaller towns and rural areas.
