Starlink Plans 150 Mbps 5G Mobile Service

SpaceX is reportedly planning a mobile service that could deliver speeds of up to 150 Mbps. Two senior SpaceX officials told different industry conferences, as reported by “Handelsblatt” in its Tuesday issue. According to Jack Rockaway, who heads the company’s government relations, the high speed might be reached within “a few years”.

The idea of the SpaceX subsidiary directly pairing its satellites with ordinary smartphones has been on the table for some time. This latest announcement takes the concept to the next level, potentially positioning SpaceX as a competitor to traditional mobile carriers. The so‑called “Direct‑To‑Cell” service is also a key part of SpaceX’s strategy for its planned initial public offering this year.
