The SPD warns that it will try to delay and weaken EU Parliament decisions that were adopted together with far‑right factions when they reach the Bundestag. “All parties should be clear that the SPD will use every means to postpone and erode, where possible, the resolutions adopted by a majority of far‑right groups at the European level – even though a general obligation to implement them exists” said the SPD’s economic policy spokesperson, Sebastian Roloff, to Focus. He added that the Union should carefully consider whether it is willing to dismantle the firebreak that protects such Pyrrhic defeats.
Roloff’s colleague, migration policy specialist Hakan Demir, called on the Christian Democrats in Brussels to change course. “The basic rule should be: if you can only realise an idea with the help of far‑right extremists, then the idea is likely wrong and should not be pursued further” he said. “Dear EVP, distance yourself quickly”.
