SPD foreign‑policy spokesperson Adis Ahmetovic criticized the crisis communication of Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul. “The initial statement that no evacuation flights would be arranged created confusion and left many affected individuals and their relatives uncertain” Ahmetovic told the news magazine “Focus”. He added that it is correct for the federal government to begin by helping vulnerable Germans depart, describing this move as a necessary course correction.
However, he warned that this measure alone will not suffice. “We are talking about tens of thousands of German citizens in the region” Ahmetovic said. “Additional support plans must follow”. He highlighted the urgent situation of some FSJ volunteers-those serving on behalf of the federal government on site. “They and their anxious parents rightly expect a quick and secure resolution”.
