SPD Slams Merz Over Hike Costs for Commuter Subsidy

The SPD has responded critically to Friedrich Merz’s (CDU) suggestions regarding an increase in the commuter allowance, particularly in light of high fuel prices. According to Dirk Wiese, the SPD’s parliamentary spokesperson, the allowance would only offer a temporary relief and would do so only to a very minor extent.

Wiese added that a more sensible approach would involve implementing a fuel price cap alongside an “excess profit tax” on energy companies. He views the direct price cap as the most effective tool for providing citizens with immediate and tangible relief. Nevertheless, the SPD politician acknowledged that they are “fundamentally pleased that our coalition partner now recognizes that further relief measures are urgently needed”.

Reportedly, a potential increase in the commuter allowance is being discussed, potentially raising it from the current 38 cents to as much as 45 cents per kilometer. This relief, if implemented, would be reflected in citizens’ tax returns the following year.
