SPD Shares Steinmeier's Doubts on New Voluntary Military Service

The SPD party faction disagrees with Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier’s skepticism regarding the current voluntary military service program. During an interview with the news portal “T-Online” Deputy Federal Parliamentary Group Chairwoman Siemtje Möller stated that while they have always mentioned discussing further measures if the recruitment corridor falls short, it is premature to do so now, adding that she refrains from engaging in speculation. Möller confirmed that a clear and transparent recruitment path has been established, noting that questionnaire forms have been distributed since January and the first recruits are currently undergoing training. She emphasized that this demonstrates momentum and progress, pointing out that the Defense Minister will begin providing regular reports on personnel development to the Bundestag starting in the summer, allowing for an assessment of whether established goals are being met.

Conversely, Jan Nolte, the military defense policy spokesperson for the AfD, sharply criticized the government’s plan. While acknowledging that distributing the questionnaires has caused young men to engage more deeply with the topic, potentially raising the number of volunteers, Nolte expressed doubt that this effort will build sufficient readiness for the Bundeswehr. He predicted that the discussion around mandatory military service will inevitably resurface.

The critique was even stronger from The Left party. Leader Jan van Aken addressed the issue vehemently, stating that Steinmeier’s remarks confirm a concern held by The Left shortly after the initial collection of military data began. van Aken accused the government of preparing for general mandatory service under the pretense of voluntary participation, even adding that the Federal President’s suggestion was using the “shield of volunteerism”. Furthermore, van Aken argued that it is inappropriate for a Federal President to demand any form of “compulsory service” for young people, suggesting the government should instead focus on securing good job opportunities, affordable housing, and general prospects for the next generation.

These contrasting views follow discussions where President Steinmeier himself, appearing in “T-Online’s” podcast “Vorangedacht” expressed doubt that the voluntary service implemented by the coalition government is enough to ensure the Bundeswehr receives a sufficient number of soldiers. He openly stated his skepticism about whether voluntary participation is adequate and suggested that the debate over mandatory service could become “relevant again”.
