Despite the recent electoral setback for the party, SPD General Secretary Tim Klüssendorf ruled out a break in the federal black‑red coalition. Asked whether a withdrawal for the SPD could be an option, he told RTL and ntv on Monday, “No, absolutely not”. He added that the Social Democrats have repeatedly shown that they can take responsibility even in difficult situations and that they would “certainly not hand this country over to extremists”.
The Social Democrats suffered a decisive defeat against the CDU in the Rhineland‑Palatinate election on Sunday and will have to vacate the state chancellery after 35 years in power. Right from election night, voices within the SPD began calling for personnel changes at the party’s leadership.
