SPD Rejects Spahn's Push To Revive German Nuclear Power

The SPD has explicitly rejected the idea put forward by CDU parliamentary group leader Jens Spahn regarding the reactivation of nuclear power plants in Germany. During an interview with the “Rheinische Post” parliamentary affairs director Dirk Wiese stated, “It’s the same old song and dance; it is not productive to constantly have the same debates”. Wiese further added that nuclear power is “the most expensive and dangerous of all energies, and the final disposal of the old radioactive waste remains unresolved to this day”. Furthermore, he noted that nuclear energy cannot serve as a reliable baseload solution in the short or medium term. “Our focus is on the future: on expanding renewable energies as an ecological, affordable, and reliable solution, supported by modern gas-fired power plants and battery storage” Wiese concluded. Spahn had previously advocated for a renewed discussion on reintroducing nuclear power and restarting recently shut-down reactors during an innovation conference for his parliamentary group on Wednesday evening, mentioning that “there are studies suggesting that the decommissioned reactors from recent years could be brought back online with costs around nine to ten billion euros”.
