Adis Ahmetovic, the foreign‑policy spokesman for the SPD parliamentary group, urged Israel and the United States to halt the war against Iran. “This war is a violation of international law” he told the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland”. “It is an act of aggression, and Germany must not become involved under Articles 25 and 26 of the Basic Law”. Ahmetovic added that Germany seeks a swift resolution through de‑escalation and diplomacy, not further military action.
Article 25 of the Basic Law states: “The general rules of international law are part of federal law. They precede and generate rights and duties directly for the residents of the territory of the federation”. Article 26(1) reads: “Actions that are capable of, and intentionally carried out to disturb the peaceful coexistence of peoples-especially the preparation of an offensive war-are unconstitutional. They must be subject to prosecution”.
Anton Hofreiter, chairman of the European Affairs Committee in the Bundestag and a member of the Greens, told the “RND” that the Iran attack is “highly questionable under international law”. He noted that the Mullah regime itself has committed international‑law violations, and cited the responsibility‑to‑protect principle that obliges states to shield people from crimes against humanity. Hofreiter said he can understand why Iranians might celebrate the attack, while commenting that international law is internally contradictory and creates dilemmas.
