SPD Leader Demands Government Intervention on Soaring Gas Prices

Vice Chancellor and SPD leader Lars Klingbeil continues to advocate for government intervention to ease the burden on drivers due to high fuel prices, despite the Chancellor’s opposition. Speaking to the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” (Saturday edition), Klingbeil argued, “The most effective approach right now is to intervene in the market; we see this happening in other European countries” adding, “And I believe we should have that kind of courage”.

He outlined a plan involving three main measures. First, he proposed an “excess profit tax” which the European Commission is currently reviewing. According to Klingbeil, this would allow the government to capture crisis profits and use the funds for genuine citizen relief. Second, he called for a reduction in energy taxes to bring immediate relief to gas stations. The third proposal was implementing a price cap, suggesting a flexible maximum price for liters of gasoline and diesel. “We need a price ceiling” he stated.

Given that Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) and Economics Minister Katherina Reiche (CDU) have strongly rejected such ideas, tough negotiations between the CDU/CSU and SPD are anticipated over the weekend, as a solution was expected by the start of next week. Klingbeil contended, “I cannot explain to anyone why some countries like Belgium, Luxembourg, or Greece-and these are certainly not communist nations-are capping prices, while they are skyrocketing here”. He concluded with a somber note, saying, “This very fragile truce unfortunately is not leading to a quick drop in prices; I am not hopeful at all”.
