SPD Faction Demands Consequences Over AfD Extremist Classification in Lower Saxony

The deputy chair of the SPD parliamentary group in the Bundestag, Sonja Eichwede, is demanding consequences following the Office for the Protection of the Constitution’s upgrade of the AfD in Lower Saxony.

“The classification of the AfD as an extremist endeavour in yet another federal state shows that the party is becoming more radicalised” she told the “Rheinische Post” (Wednesday edition). “This is another warning that shows we must take action”.

Eichwede said that protecting the liberal‑democratic basic order is a responsibility that must be taken seriously. “Therefore we must heed the indications and classifications of the security authorities and consider all available tools” she added. “A federal‑state working group is currently evaluating which civil‑service or weapons‑law consequences a classification should impose on AfD members. We are also reviewing all additional constitutional measures at our disposal to safeguard our democracy”.
