The planned coalition between the SPD and CDU in Brandenburg has cleared its final hurdle. At a state party conference in Potsdam on Saturday, the Social Democrats approved the coalition agreement in an open vote, with nearly 96 percent of delegates supporting the alliance with the Union. Earlier, a poll of CDU members also showed a clear preference for the coalition, with roughly 83 percent voting in favour, according to party figures. The agreement is set to remain in effect until the state election in 2029.
Following the collapse of the SPD-BSW coalition, the SPD and CDU intend to govern together for the remaining three-and-a-half years leading up to the 2029 election. The coalition contract will be signed on Monday by Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (SPD) and the chosen Interior Minister Jan Redmann (CDU).
