Facing soaring fuel prices, the SPD plans to tighten antitrust regulations and raise the commuter allowance.
Economic policy spokesman Sebastian Roloff told the T‑Online news portal on Monday that fuel costs in Germany have risen substantially more than in neighboring countries, indicating a malfunction in the market. “Because of this, we will tighten antitrust law this week” he said, noting that the move would give the Federal Cartel Office more long‑term resources.
Roloff also called for additional measures in the short term, such as a fuel‑price brake or a higher commuter allowance for 2026 to ease workers’ burdens. He suggested stronger regulation of the oil majors, insisting that “big companies should not be able to siphon record profits at the back of consumers”.
