SPD Accuses Gas Stations Of Nickel And Dime Over Iran War Fuel Price Hikes

The SPD says that the rapid rise in fuel prices at gas stations-attributable to the Iran war-is unjustified. Esra Limbacher, the party’s deputy group leader, told the Rheinische Post’s Tuesday edition that what is happening at many pumps is outright gouging and that the very early price hikes are unacceptable. She added that the gasoline and diesel currently sold were largely purchased at much lower crude‑oil prices. Nonetheless, she warned that rising expectations should not simply be used to justify price increases. It is unacceptable to use geopolitical uncertainty as a pretext for excessive margins, she said. Limbacher called for greater market transparency and a strict check on any exploitation of crisis situations. She also demanded that if world‑market prices go up and are passed on immediately, any subsequent price falls must be passed to consumers just as quickly.
