The head of the CDU parliamentary group, Jens Spahn, announced that the government may consider additional relief measures if oil prices remain high even after the temporary fuel discount expires. Speaking to the news portal T-Online, Spahn acknowledged, “We are aware that July 1st represents a real cliff edge. We will need to closely monitor in June whether further actions are necessary”. He further noted that if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed after another two months, “we will face completely different problems”. Spahn also observed visible signs of disruption, pointing to breakdowns in supply chains within the construction and chemical industries. Regarding the fuel discount approved by the coalition, Spahn stated that it is set to take effect starting May 1st. He expressed confidence, saying, “Our goal is to pass the law in the Bundestag next week. We hope that the Bundesrat convenes for a special session, as this would allow the tax reduction to take effect by May 1st. This is a relatively quick pace”.
