Spahn Re-elected Tribune Leader for CDU-led Union Faction

Jens Spahn (CDU) retains his position as head of the Bundestag parliamentary group for the Union parties. According to reports, when he was re-elected on Tuesday-a typical vote held one year into a legislative term-he received a supporting rate of 86.5 percent, and there was no competing candidate.

This voting outcome marks a slight dip compared to his election from the previous year, when he secured 91.3 percent for the CDU/CSU parliamentary group leader. It is worth noting that abstentions are typically not counted in Union votes, unlike in many other parties.

Under normal circumstances, Spahn can expect to remain in this role until the end of the current legislative period and will not need to stand for re-election until 2029.

Addressing the group before the session on Tuesday, Spahn stated, “We want, we must, and we are obliged to solve the problems right here, in the political center, within this coalition”. He emphasized his daily commitment to keeping the coalition together for the next three years. According to Spahn, “The most important thing right now is to instill confidence amidst the bad moods seen in many places, because people cannot see a clear perspective”.
